
IOLS is a hands-on training course designed to teach adult volunteers the basic outdoor skills they need to help Scouts learn and grow in the outdoors. It’s part of the required training for Scoutmasters and Assistant Scoutmasters in the Scouts BSA program (for youth ages 11–17).
What You Learn
- Participants gain confidence and practical experience in outdoor skills like:
- Setting up tents and choosing campsites
- Outdoor cooking and campfire safety
- Basic first aid and nature awareness
- Map and compass navigation
- Knife, axe, and saw safety (aka “Totin’ Chip” skills)
- Fire building, knots, lashings, and more
Basically, you learn what Scouts are learning—so you can support, teach, and lead them effectively.
