Instructor for Troop Safety

The Minsi Trails Council is piloting a unit youth leadership position called the Instructor for Troop Safety.  The Instructor for Troop Safety is an older Scout with an interest in fostering safety awareness, planning and compliance with the youth members of the Troop.  The Instructor for Troop Safety is charged with making sure that safety considerations are included in all youth activities.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as a member of the Patrol Leaders' Council
  • Ensures a relevant Safety moment is conducted at the start of each Troop meeting
  • Utilizing the "SAFE" checklist, research potential safety concerns prior to Troop activities and ensures considerations are included in planning all activities
  • Conducts a safety briefing at the beginning of activities
  • Conducts a debrief at the end of activities to review safety challenges encountered, how they were handled, and lessons learned
  • Understands what is included in the Guide to Safe Scouting, and serves as a monitor during Troop meetings and activities to help the Scoutmaster ensure compliance with protocols
  • Teaches and guides other scouts about guidelines in the Guide to Safe Scouting
  • Sets a good example
  • Wears the Scout uniform correctly
  • Lives by the Scout Oath and Law
  • Shows Scout spirit
  • Take appropriate online Scouting America training related to activity being planned (i.e. Safe Swim Defense, Safety Afloat, Climb on Safely, etc.)
  • Is certified or become certified in CPR and First Aid
